Did our universe have a beginning?
I will begin with a brief introduction to the “Standard Model of cosmology” which has proved highly successful in recent times. In particular, I will discuss the necessity to have a phase of inflation, an extreme growth phase in our very “early universe”. I will next show a new way of realizing inflation involving cycles where the universe undergoes periodic contractions and expansions and time is eternal in the past. I will conclude by discussing how such models can be tested in the future using observations.
